Does Asana's export include comments?
Not the project exports. Asana staff have said so on the community forum more than once. In 2019 an Asana team member wrote that "at the moment our CSV and PDF options don't include comments" (forum thread). In 2020 Asana's community manager wrote that you can export projects to CSV "but at the moment it doesn't include comments" (forum post). That feature request is still open.
We also checked a project's JSON export ourselves on October 19, 2026. It had task fields only, no comments. Asana's guide to exporting to CSV covers what the CSV does include.
Some Asana plans also have admin-level exports of a whole organization. If you're on one of those plans, check with Asana whether your plan's export includes comments.
Option 1: copy and paste, or print each task
Open each task, copy the comments into a doc, and save it. It's fine for a handful of tasks and gets slow fast on a big project.
Printing to PDF is the other quick route, but it isn't always clean. One forum member wrote in March 2026 that "printing to a PDF cuts off comments in random places" (forum post).
Option 2: the Asana API
If you're comfortable with a little code, the API has everything you need:
- List the project's tasks (and their subtasks, which come from a separate call).
- For each task, get its stories from the stories endpoint.
- Keep the stories whose type is comment, and write them out next to their task.
There are free scripts on GitHub that do a version of this, for example sammdu/asana-export-with-comments (runs in the browser console) and rkaiser0324/export-asana (a PHP script that writes HTML). We didn't write them and haven't tested them, so read the code before you run it.
Option 3: Export With Comments
This is our tool. You connect Asana (read-only), pick a project, and download a file with every task and its full comment thread: who said it, when, and what they said. Subtasks come along too.
- CSV of one project at a time is free, any size.
- Excel, PDF and exporting several projects in one run come with a $39 one-time license for one person. No subscription. Paid licenses are for US billing addresses for now.
- The file is built in your browser. We don't store your tasks or comments, and we can't change anything in your Asana.
You can look at sample files first, made from a made-up demo project. We're also listed in the Asana app directory.

FAQ
Can I export Asana comments to Excel?
Not with Asana's own project export. With Export With Comments, the Excel file has a sheet of tasks with their comments, plus separate Tasks and Comments sheets. More on the Excel and CSV page.
Can I export Asana comments to PDF?
Printing tasks to PDF works for small projects, though comments can get cut off. Export With Comments makes one PDF with every task and its comment thread. See the PDF page.
Does Asana JSON export include comments?
The project JSON export doesn't. When we checked it on October 19, 2026, it had task fields only. If your plan has an admin-level organization export, check with Asana whether it includes comments.
Is there a free way to export Asana comments?
Yes. Copying by hand and the API are free. Export With Comments also exports one project at a time to CSV for free, with every comment.
